MAN CAVE

The Jacksonville Jaguars released starting quarterback David Garrard on Tuesday in a surprise move just days before the season opener. Luke McCown, who outplayed Garrard and rookie Blaine Gabbert in the preseason, was given the starting job.
Tuesday's (September 6th) full slate of games at the U.S. Open were canceled yesterday at Flushing Meadows in New York due to steady rain. The matches canceled included four men's singles fourth round matches and two women's singles quarterfinals matches.

E-Mail “Inbox”

Hey Don my name is Steve and I’ve been listening for years. So I’m emailing you because my friends and I were debating on haircut etiquette. To make a long story short I’m trying out a new barber this week after mine moved away.

I asked my friend what I should do if I notice he’s cutting my hair all wrong and he told me I should stop him and tell him to fix it. I’ve never done this before and was wondering if all guys tell their barbers to fix their haircuts mid cut or if that’s just my friend?

Do you think it’s ok to do that?

Signed,
Steve

Well Steve, you can try, but if the Barber is too far into the cut, your out of luck. But look on the bright side, the difference between a good haircut and a bad haircut. Two weeks!

HEALTH MOMENT

Children who have a hard time passing up one cookie now with the promise of more later will probably have just as hard a time resisting temptation as adults, according to a new study.
Researchers found children who had difficulty delaying gratification as preschoolers were more likely to seek instant gratification as adults. They also showed differences in brain activity that may be linked to self-control issues.
"This is the first time we have located the specific brain areas related to delayed gratification. This could have major implications in the treatment of obesity and addictions," says study researcher B.J. Casey, in a news release. Casey is director of the Sackler Institute for Developmental Psychobiology at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City.
The study is published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

WHAT’S FOR DINNER

Double Baked Caramel Pears

INGREDIENTS:

3 large ripe firm Bartlett pears, peeled, cored and split lengthwise
2 Tablespoons brown sugar
2 Tablespoons dark rum
1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
1 Tablespoon unsalted butter
13 square caramels
1 teaspoon dark rum
Cooking juices from pears
Vanilla ice cream

INGREDIENTS for Glaze:

3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup water
1 to 2 teaspoons rose water

TO PREPARE:

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. In an 8-inch square baking pan, arrange pears, cut side down with tops pointing toward center. Set aside.
2. Combine brown sugar, 2 Tablespoons rum, lemon juice and butter in microwaveable dish. Heat on high in microwave until butter is melted, about 30 seconds. Brush mixture over pears.
3. Bake, uncovered, until pears are just tender, 20-25 minutes, brushing with pan juices 2 times during baking. Reserve pan juices. (Pears can be baked 1 day ahead, covered and refrigerated; let come to room temperature before reheating.)
4. Melt caramels with 1 teaspoon rum and pan juices in deep microwaveable dish on medium (50 percent power) in microwave for 1 – 1-1/2 minutes, stirring twice. Watch carefully to avoid scorching. Stir until smooth.
5. Cut pear halves lengthwise into quarters. Pour sauce evenly over pears. Bake uncovered at 300 degrees until heated through, about 12 minutes. Spoon caramel sauce over pears once during reheating.
6. To serve, arrange 3 pear quarters in individual dessert dishes. Top with scoops of vanilla ice cream. Spoon caramel sauce over ice cream.

BREAK TIME CHATTER

#1.) This proves a dog doesn't need to be BIG to be a hero . . . it just needs a really annoying bark. On Friday morning, in Utah, a TOY POODLE that weighs less than 10 pounds SAVED its 19-year-old owner from a house fire. When firefighters got to the house, the 19-year-old was trapped inside . . . and the poodle barked at the firefighters until they followed him in the right direction to the basement to save the guy.

#2.) Frankly, I'd be surprised if this number was any LOWER. A new survey found that nine out of ten teenagers admit they're EMBARRASSED by their parents. The two main sources of embarrassment are when their parents dance a little too enthusiastically at weddings . . . and when their parents engage in public displays of affection.
I use to embarrass my kids dancing to grocery store music while shopping.

And I leave you with this thought…

"You see things; and you say "Why?" But I dream things that never were; and I say "Why not?"
