CELEBRITY GOSSIP:

Hurricane Irene reportedly messed up Mariah Carey's shooting schedule with X Factor. Simon Cowell previously confirmed that the singer will be participating in his upcoming Fox series -- but TMZ reported that Carey had to cancel a "very important" video shoot because she couldn't get a flight out of New York. Sources told TMZ that the show has been thrown into "utter chaos" as a result, and they are still trying to figure out how to get the necessary footage. It's unclear what role Mariah will play on the show.

ON THIS DAY IN COUNTRY

August-30-2011
• George Strait, Sonny James and session guitarist Harold Bradley were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2006.
• Brooks & Dunn's Hillbilly Deluxe album was released in 2005.
• Kenny Chesney scored his first Number One single with "She's Got It All" in 1997.

Celebrity Spotlight

Jake Owen says that his current hit, "Barefoot Blue Jean Night," is a game changer for him. The song has been the fastest-climbing hit of his career, and as Jake tells us, it's his very own "Sweet Home Alabama." ["It's like nothing I've really honestly ever experienced. I've had hit songs on the radio before, but there's a difference between a hit song and like an undeniable song that people just gravitate towards -- obviously based off sales as well, but I remember I always wanted one of those songs I remember playing back in college on a barstool where I would play like (hums) and like right when you start playing that -- 'Sweet Home Alabama' -- everyone freaks out. I was like, I always want one of those songs where the minute you play the intro people freak out, and as I've seen all over the country so far on this Keith Urban tour that when we play that intro guitar acoustic part instantly people just stand up. That is a good feeling, so I understand the difference now between just hit songs and like career songs, and I think this is like a career kind of song."]

Riddle Me This

HOMETOWN HERO’S

Simply put, Hometown Hero’s are people who help others in some way.
Our Hometown Hero(’s) Today is/are Tom Benson
My dad was the third of three children. Born almost exactly 9 months after World War II ended, he was one of the first baby boomers. My dad put himself through college, volunteered for the army and fought in the Vietnam War. He started multiple multi-million dollar companies, ran for senator, spent 7 years on the local school board, and helped raise me and my sister. For someone who has been through so much, I cant believe how caring and giving my dad can be. He loves nothing more than to see others smile.
My dad is an amazing person, who I will always turn to for inspiration and guidance.
I love you Dad.
Tom Benson is/are our Hometown Hero Today and we salute you.

MAN CAVE

Texas A&M has notified the Big 12 it will withdraw from the conference, according to a newspaper report. Texas A&M President R. Bowen Loftin sent a letter to Missouri Chancellor and Big 12 board chairman Brady Deaton to inform the league it was leaving. Texas A&M's departure would cast doubt on the future of the Big 12 and could lead to more major changes to college athletics.

Former NBA player Javaris Crittenton, who was suspended from the league for having guns in a locker room with teammate Gilbert Arenas, was arrested Monday in Southern California to face a murder charge in a deadly Atlanta shooting. Crittenton was taken into custody at about 8 p.m. at John Wayne Airport in Orange County after checking in for a Delta Air Lines flight to Atlanta.

E-Mail “Inbox”

What’s up Don? I got engaged a few weeks ago and I’m having trouble calling my girlfriend my fiancé. I find the word annoying and obnoxious but feel pressure to say fiancé instead of girlfriend.

What else can I call her besides fiancé?
Signed,
Ben

Ben, I’m tempted to run away from this one, but I’ll give it a shot. How about you caller the future Mrs. Ben, my soon to be Mrs. I do, this is the future mother of my children, this is the future ball and chain. On second thought, forget that last one, she could be the future Mrs. Ex-Ben before she’s Mrs. Ben.
Good luck!

HEALTH MOMENT

This is important information for you boxing fans.
Teens and boxing are a bad combination, doctors say.
The risk of brain and other injuries during boxing makes the sport too risky, according to a new policy statement by U.S. and Canadian pediatrician groups.
The statement urges doctors to ''vigorously oppose boxing for any child or adolescent.''
"Children and adolescents should not be participating in boxing because of the risk of head and facial injuries," says statement co-author Laura Purcell, MD. Purcell is a pediatric sports medicine doctor for the Canadian Paediatric Society.
Children's brains are more vulnerable to concussion, the doctors say. Recovery takes longer in kids.
There may also be long-term consequences. "We don't know what the long-term effects are, particularly with amateur boxing," Purcell says.
The new statement, like the earlier one, asks pediatricians to oppose youth boxing, to educate their patients, and to suggest other sports.

BREAK TIME CHATTER

#1.) Remember when people thought having a TV in the bedroom was bad for intimacy? At least couples watched that TOGETHER. A new study has found that at least 20% of couples, or one in five, take their LAPTOPS or IPADS to bed . . . and spend more time looking at their screens than they spend looking at each other.

#2.) Social networks are continuing to RAPIDLY take over the country. In a new survey, 50% of ALL adults in this country are now on a social networking site. Six years ago, it was only 8%. Even senior citizens are getting more and more involved in social networking . . . 33% of adults over 65 with Internet access use social networking.

#3.) Parenting style is one of the biggest influences on whether children behave responsibly when it comes to alcohol. A study by the British consulting firm Demos found that kids with bad parenting are eight times more likely to drink at age 16, and twice as likely to binge drink as adults. The key is to be loving and supportive until they turn ten, then start cracking the whip with the tough love.
Sounds like a reason to drink right there!

And I leave you with this thought…

Optimists are less likely to suffer from high blood pressure or other early signs of cardiovascular disease than pessimists.
