Celebrity Spotlight
It seems just like yesterday that Billy Ray Cyrus busted onto the Nashville scene with his 1992 #1 hit “Achy Breaky Heart.” As the singer celebrates the big 5-0, he continues to pursue music with his latest album, I’m American. “I’m lookin’ forward to the fall. We got a lot of great tour dates coming up and a bunch more seem to be kinda lining up. So, I’m thinking I’m in a good spot right now to just kind of ah…I play music by ear and I play life by ear and there’s just several great opportunities.” If you can’t make it out to one of Billy Ray’s live shows, you can catch him on the small screen on TLC’s Surprise Homecoming and Christmas in Canaan 2 on the Hallmark Channel.
RELATED NEWS: Billy Ray will become a grandfather at 50! E! News has confirmed that his son, 22-year-old Trace and his 23-year-old girlfriend Brenda Song are expecting their first child together. Brenda is an actress and has appeared in the Disney Channel’s Suite Life of Zack and Cody as well as The Social Network movie. Trace is a member of the pop-rock band Metro Station.
Riddle Me This
In olden days, the student of logic was given this problem:
If half of 5 were 3, what would one-third of 10 be?
Do you know?
It would be 4
HOMETOWN HERO’S
Simply put, Hometown Hero’s are people who help others in some way.
Our Hometown Hero(’s) Today is/are Pablo Santiago.
My everyday hero was my father. He was diagnosed with Cancer in the pancreas in 2009 and his fight lasted only nine short months. In those nine months he prepared me for life after he was gone, he helped me figure out who should walk me down the isle, he reminded me he'd be watching over me the day I graduated, and for every birthday he'd always be there. To speak of moving on, and living life without him must have torn him to pieces but he did it so bravely. He was the most selfless man I knew, even in his last days, he was making sure all of us were ready and prepared. When he found out his battle was terminal he got all of our huge family together and told us, I remember him saying "You do the things you have to do, and know that they are there for a reason, you don't have to have all the answers". The value he was determined to instill in me, and all those close to him was to Choose Hope, to never give up and never stop believing, and on my dark days when I feel like nothings worth it anymore, I remember to Choose Hope, and I know that its my daddy reminding me that there's always light at the end of the storm. He's my Guardian Angel, and my everyday hero.

Good morning Don my name is Terri and I’m 22 years old and just started dating again after breaking up with my boyfriend of 2 years. So I’ve gone out with several guys, most of which are my type, tall dark hair and bright eyes and in shape. Then I met a guy at a club the other night that wasn’t my type at all but he made me laugh and wants to hang out.
I haven’t gone out with him yet but we text a couple of times a day and I think he’s cool. He’s about my height has dirty blonde hair and is not in great shape but isn’t fat, not really my type. Since I’m still getting the hang of dating again do you think it’s a bad idea to go out with a guy I’m generally that into physically?
Can dating outside of your type ever really work?
Signed,
Terri
Well Terri, you know they say opposites attract. I think you owe it to yourself to learn more about this guy who has perked your interest. You never know, he might turn out to be just your type. After all, you’ve tried what you thought was your type in the past. Were has that gotten you.
Good Luck
HEALTH MOMENT
Here’s some Parental information that is eye opening.
Teens who spend time on Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, and other social networking sites may be more likely to smoke, drink alcohol, and use drugs.
That's according to Columbia University's National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA). CASA recently polled more than 2,000 teens online or by phone, as well as 528 parents of teens.
The results show that compared to teens who don't visit social networking sites daily, those who do are:
• Five times more likely to use tobacco
• Three times more likely to drink alcohol
• Twice as likely to use marijuana
Most teens -- 70% -- said they spend anywhere from one minute to hours a day on social networking sites.
But it's not the fact that teens visit social network sites that makes them more likely to abuse alcohol or other drugs. Instead, the issue seems to be what they view on those sites. Forty percent of the teens in CASA's survey said they have seen images of intoxicated kids, including some who are passed out, as well as pictures of peers using drugs.
The CASA report does not prove that social networking caused teens to abuse alcohol or other drugs. Surveys like this show associations but cannot prove cause and effect.
WHAT’S FOR DINNER
Hen Sauce Piquante
INGREDIENTS:
1 hen
1/4 cup steak seasoning
4 cups chopped onion
2 cups chopped bell pepper
1/3 cup minced garlic
4 bay leaves
1 teaspoon thyme
1 teaspoon rosemary
6 (12 ounce) cans chicken broth
1 cup roux (see below for recipe)
1 (12 ounce) can tomatoes
1 (10 ounce) can cream of mushroom soup
Water
2 cups chopped green onion
Salt and pepper to taste
INGREDIENTS for Basic Roux:
2/3 cup flour
3/4 cup oil
TO PREPARE Hen Piquante:
Cut hen into small pieces. Sprinkle with steak seasoning and brown completely in large pot. Remove hen. Leave drippings and add onions and bell pepper, garlic, bay leaves, thyme and rosemary. Saute until tender. Add chicken broth and bring to boil. Add roux and stir constantly. Add tomatoes and can of cream of mushroom soup. Add water and stir well. Allow to cook in oven at 325 degrees for three hours. Remove and add green onions and let sit for ten minutes. Serve over rice.
TO PREPARE Basic Roux:
Mix the flour and oil in a heavy iron pot until it is thoroughly mixed before you turn on the fire under the pot. After it is mixed, turn the fire on to medium to low, stirring constantly. Stir all over the bottom of the pot to be sure that no particles stick to the bottom. As you stir, the roux browns slowly. Don't cookyour roux fast, because as it reaches the done point, it will be too hot and burn. When your roux is a rich dark brown, turn off the heat immediately, continuing to stir. Add water to lower the temperature slightly so the roux will stop browning. Or, you can add chopped onions and/or bell peppers to lower temperature. Continue stirring, return to heat and add the remainder of the ingredients for your stew or gumbo.
A heavy pot is a must to make a pretty roux. The heavier the pot, the easier your job will be. Before you start your roux, start heating water in kettle, the amount depending on whether you are making a gumbo or a stew. You must always add hot water to a roux. It is very important not to change the temperature of the roux by adding cold water to it. The measurements given above make a rouxlarge enough for a stew with 1 hen, or a gumbo with two pounds of shrimp.
NOTE: If you wish to make a larger recipe, enlarge the recipe in the same proportions given. We feel it to be important to use more oil than flour.
BREAK TIME CHATTER
#1.) On Father's Day this past June, a 75-year-old man in Washington, D.C. fell, screwed up some bones in his ear, and lost his hearing. Then, on Tuesday, he was lying in bed when the earthquake hit . . . and it CURED HIS DEAFNESS. The doctors aren't quite sure how . . . the theory is that the shaking jarred his ear bones back into their proper place.
#2.) Now THIS is how you get the school year off to a memorable start. On Tuesday, in Pleasant Hill, Iowa, a bus was taking 16 middle school kids home from their first day of classes . . . when it caught on FIRE. The driver evacuated the kids, who stayed calm and orderly . . . and just when they got a safe distance away, the bus EXPLODED. There were no injuries.
#3.) This product is the work of GENIUS. They're called CHERKEES and they're a hybrid of BEEF JERKY and POTATO CHIPS. Not jerky-flavored chips or thin pieces of jerky . . . meat and potatoes are actually blended to make these things. Unfortunately they're all sold out now but you can get on a mailing list that will alert you when they're back in stock. http://www.rowanlane.com/
And I leave you with this thought…
"Start by doing what's necessary; then do what's possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible."
