Work Like a Dog Day

Birthdays:

Loni Anderson (actress, WKRP in Cincinnati) (66)

Neil Armstrong (astronaut, the first man to walk on the Moon) (81)

Patrick Ewing (former basketball star) (49)

CELEBRITY GOSSIP:

Val Kilmer's ex-wife is accusing him of being a deadbeat dad. TMZ reported that Joanne Whalley -- who was married to the actor from 1988 to 1996 -- obtained a lien against the actor's ranch in New Mexico to get money that he owes her in child support.

Ryan Reynolds revealed that he was hit by a drunk driver 15 years ago. The actor told CTV News, "When I was 19 I was drinking. I was at a bar and I had a few drinks and I thought, 'You know what I'm going to do? I'm going to leave my car here, be responsible.' I started to walk home and I was hit by a drunk driver."

Redmond O'Neal pleaded not guilty to felony heroin possession and to being a felon in possession of a firearm stemming from an arrest earlier this week. 26-year-old Redmond -- the son of Farrah Fawcett and Ryan O'Neal -- was arrested on Tuesday (August 2nd) after he allegedly failed to stop at a red light.

ON THIS DAY IN COUNTRY

Charley Pride was part of an 18-person investor group headed by Nolan Ryan that bought the Texas Rangers baseball team for $593 million at auction in Fort Worth in 2010.

Alan Jackson climbed to Number One on the Billboard country singles chart with "I Don't Even Know Your Name" in 1995.

Dolly Parton's "Why'd You Come In Here Lookin' Like That" went to Number One in 1989

Rosanne Cash recorded the chart-topping hit, "Seven Year Ache," in 1980.

Celebrity Spotlight

Carrie Underwood’s hit, “Mama’s Song” snagged an Inspirational Country Music Award nomination for Mainstream Inspirational Country Song of the Year. Written even before her engagement and marriage to hockey-star Mike Fisher, the song’s themes of love and family made it an inspiration for fans as well as a big hit on the charts. But Carrie reveals initially, the song was written as a special message for her mother Carol. “The song was meant in the…in the beginning to kind of be…it was taking the form of, like, a wedding song. Like, this mom has to let go and give her daughter away to another person to take care of. That’s an amazing, sad, and happy time in somebody’s life.” Lady Antebellum’s “Hello World,” Rascal Flatts’ “I Won’t Let Go,” Ronnie Dunn’s “Bleed Red” and Chris Young’s “Voices” are also nominated in the category. Carrie’s also nominated for Video of the Year, and the Mainstream Country Artist award.

Riddle Me This

A man was playing blackjack at a local casino, the first hand he got a blackjack, the second hand he lost, the next hand he got a blackjack the next one he lost and the next one he lost, leaving a very sad man with no money he lost every single hand, how is this possible?

The first hand he got a Jack of Spades and the third hand he got a Jack of Clubs. A Black Jack.

HOMETOWN HERO’S

Simply put, Hometown Hero’s are people who help others in some way.
Our Hometown Hero(’s) Today is/are Dan Gordon
My dad is buried in Riverside Arlington National Memorial Cemetery for his service in Vietnam. He died 40 years after exposure to Agent Orange. In fact he was one of the first cases. In the months before he passed he said to me, "good girl, you're a good girl." He chose to go off antibiotics and died from a final bout with pneumonia after a fragile fight against it. My dad is my hero because he lived to serve and love his family. It has been seven years now but not a day goes by that his legacy does not live on through his family and the excellent service he did for his country.

E-Mail “Inbox”

Dear Don,
When a guy says “I’ll catch you later” after the first date, what does it mean?

I met a guy twice and we hit it off, and the second time he asked me out on a date over email. We had a great first date, even held hands and he gave me a peck on the lips and tight hug. He said, "I'll catch you later."

What does that mean!? Then when I emailed him 2 days later to tell him I had a great time and hope to hang out again he wrote, "We will catch each other soon".

Is he too shy to ask me out again or just not interested!?

Signed,
Nicole

Well Nicole, it could be a blow off or it could mean just what it says, catch you later meaning I see you at a later time. Seems a little non-committal to me though, I wouldn’t use that terminology myself. Take a wait and see approach, if he calls back great, if not, move on to the next guy. Good Luck

MAN CAVE

Oklahoma is the preseason No. 1 in the USA Today coaches' poll. The Sooners received 42 of 59 first-place votes to easily outpoint No. 2 Alabama, which received 13 first-place votes. Oregon, which lost last season's BCS championship game, is third and LSU is fourth.

Big Ten football teams will begin playing nine conference games instead of eight in the 2017 season. The conference announced the change Thursday and it came as no surprise. When the league expanded to 12 teams by adding Nebraska and split into two divisions this year, Commissioner Jim Delany said a nine-game conference schedule was being strongly considered.

Eagles trainer Rick Burkholder said defensive tackle Mike Patterson has a brain condition that may require surgery. Burkholder said Thursday that Patterson is undergoing further tests. The 27-year-old Patterson was hospitalized after suffering a seizure Wednesday morning at training camp at Lehigh University.

HEALTH MOMENT

Here’s an alert you should be aware of.
Some child car safety seats may contain hazardous chemicals including flame retardants, according to the fourth annual report by the Ecology Center, an Ann Arbor, Mich.-based nonprofit environmental organization.
Researchers tested more than 150 2011-model infant, convertible, and booster car seats for the presence of potentially harmful chemicals. These chemicals have been associated with reproductive and developmental health problems and certain cancers in animal and some human studies.
Researchers say, “Car seats should be used regardless of what our test results show,” they say the new data can be useful when shopping for a car seat.
They also stated, “It is very important to understand that these are chemicals in synthetic materials that are present throughout our environment, not just in car seats.”
Overall, flame retardants were present in 44% of the car seats that were sampled, and 60% of the car seats tested positive for one or more toxic chemicals, the report showed.
This is something to consider when choosing a car seat.

BREAK TIME CHATTER

#1.) It's possible that kids born three or four years from now many never really know what CASH is. According to a report in the U.K., one out of eight people has stopped carrying cash and is just using credit and debit cards. And 50% of people believe that cash and coins are going to be extinct in the near future.

#2.) If you shop on Walmart.com because you can't handle the lines, the crowds, and the unkempt mullets in the stores . . . they've STILL found a way to make you angry. In a new study, Walmart had the WORST shipping times of any major shopping site . . . an average of 5.5 days to get you your stuff. Costco.com had the fastest shipping, at 1.5 days.

#3.) A new survey has figured out the age when married couples pretty much give up on kissing each other. And it is . . . age 45. By that point, married couples don't kiss very often . . . and at least one in five go more than a week between kisses. Married couples ages 18 to 25 kiss the most . . . about twice a day. For what it's worth, 5% of couples over 45 do kiss more than 30 times a week. I SAY, LETS KISS MORE!

And I leave you with this thought…

More things are wrought by prayer. Than this world dreams of.

KEEP SMILEIN
