Celebrity Spotlight

Rascal Flatts’ Jay DeMarcus celebrates a milestone birthday today as he turns 40. The occasion might be a chance for Jay to relax and spend time with his family just before kicking off the band’s summer Flatts Fest tour. Band-mate Joe Don Rooney says the guys always have something to do in their free time. “You know, I love to play golf. You know, I love to write and create music in my own time away from Rascal Flatts as does Jay and Gary’s got you know, lots of hobbies. Hunting’s one of his favorite things to do. But, I mean you gotta have those outlets. You just do and um, we’re lucky enough to, to have those.” Rascal Flatts kicks off Flatts Fest on June 18th in Bristow, Virginia.
• TIDBIT – Jay is brother-in-law to country singer James Otto and is second-cousin to Rascal Flatts’ Gary LeVox.

RIDDLE ME THIS

There is a straw house on fire, a rock house on fire, and a brick house on fire. Which house does the ambulance put out first?

Neither. The ambulance doesn't put out fires.

Our Hometown Hero(’s) Today is/are Staff and Volunteers of MOPS
The need for friendship and support among new moms is what inspired MOPS, Mothers of Preschoolers founding in 1973, when eight women in Wheat Ridge, Colo. gathered one February morning in a preschool classroom at Trinity Baptist Church. While caregivers watched over their children in the church nursery, the mothers sat on child-size chairs and shared stories of early motherhood. They talked, laughed, prayed, drank coffee, made a craft and passed a basket to pay for childcare expenses. From the very start, MOPS was a place to come and find friendship, a creative outlet and spiritual perspective, says Jan Horner, 67, one of the founders. Today, MOPS is headquartered in Denver, with 3,520 chapters in the United States and another 115 international chapters that welcome any woman with a child who is newborn to kindergarten age. Most meet in churches. Some groups are geared specifically for teenage moms, while others meet on military bases and cater to families in the armed forces. Some MOPS groups have added evening meetings to accommodate the schedules of working mothers.
Organizers say MOPS has struck a chord for nearly four decades because its principles are timeless valuing each mother as an individual and affirming her role in helping to rear and nurture the next generation.

Staff and Volunteers of MOPS is/are our Hometown Hero Today and we salute you.

HEALTH MOMENT

Small doses of aspirin can lower the risk of heart attack in people who never had heart disease, a new look at the medical evidence shows.
But the blood-thinning drug doesn't appear to cut the chances of dying from the disease, at least not enough that researchers can say for certain. And experts warn people to consult their doctor before taking the medication, which increases the risk of bleeding ulcers.
The task force advises that men age 45 to 79 take aspirin to stave off heart attacks, as long as the benefit outweighs the risk of bleeding. For women age 55 to 79, aspirin is recommended to prevent strokes, with the same caveat.
About 100,000 men and women age 45 and up took part in the studies. Some were healthy and some had diabetes, but none had chest pain or other symptoms of an ailing heart.
The researchers found a 19-percent reduction in non-fatal heart attacks among participants who took aspirin compared to those who did not.
"The number of events that you prevent depends on your baseline risk. A blanket recommendation that everybody should take an aspirin is not a good idea."

BREAK TIME CHATTER

#1.) For many decades, we were a country of burgers and fries. Now, for better or worse, we like turkey sandwiches and soy lattes. In 2010, for the first time ever, STARBUCKS had better sales than Burger King and Wendy's. The top three most successful chains were McDonald's, Subway, and Starbucks.

#2.) This is one of the most incredible coincidences EVER. A man from Massachusetts was on a family vacation in Hawaii and a hotel employee offered to take his family photo. That employee had a Massachusetts accent. They got to talking . . . and learned they were actually HALF-BROTHERS who NEVER KNEW ABOUT EACH OTHER.

#3.) In Iowa, a man saw a guy steal his Buick, so he started chasing him down. The thief ended up running the man OVER . . . but he just got up, shook off his injuries, and kept chasing his car. The thief ended up crashing and trying to run, and the man tackled him and held him in a headlock until the cops arrived.

And I leave you with this thought…

"Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved. "
