This Is Nuts

Sunday, the Green Bay Packers beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-25 in an exciting, hard-fought Super Bowl game. But a lot of the drama was off-field. Despite charging fans $200 each to stand in the parking lot in a cold rain and watch the game on TV monitors, Dallas Cowboys owners Jerry Jones failed to set a new attendance record. 103,219 people crammed the stadium, but that was 766 fewer than the Steelers-Rams game of 1980. And some who did get in are still angry. Just before game time, the fire marshal ruled that hundreds of temporary seats weren't safe, so they were left empty while 1200 people with tickets were told their seats were gone. Seats were found for most, but about 400 had to watch from the basement bar. They were told they'd get a refund of three times their tickets' face value, but if they paid a scalper $2000 for a $600 ticket, they'll still lose $200.

* They could've paid that much to stand in the parking lot and seen it on a really BIG
TV!

HEALTH MOMENT

Parents of children with autism will rattle off the list of treatments, therapies and diets they have tried in an effort to reduce or eliminate the symptoms or characteristics of autism.
The lists are usually long: gluten-free/casein-free diet, applied behavioral analysis, floor time, anti-anxiety medication, sensory integration therapy, etc.
One therapy that is gaining attention in the autism community is hyperbaric oxygen therapy, or HBOT, a treatment in which a patient breathes pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber. Typically utilized in patients with air embolisms, decompression sickness, or soft tissue infections, HBOT is covered by insurance companies for a small number of approved diagnoses, but most will not cover it for the treatment of autism.
The theory behind using HBOT in people with autism is that the increase in oxygen will reduce excess swelling of brain tissue, increase cerebral blood flow and stimulate cerebral tissue. The belief is that all of these results will allow the brain to do its job better, resulting in a person who is more "present" in regards to social interaction and communication.
As parents of children with special needs know all too well, there is no cure for autism, nor is there one single treatment that works for every child on the spectrum. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is just one treatment on the list of many that parents are willing to try to improve the life of their child.

BREAK TIME CHATTER

America Online announced that it is acquiring the liberal news
and commentary site, the Huffington Post, for $315 million. They will also put Arianna
Huffington in charge of all AOL editorial content as president and editor-in-chief of a
new Huffington Post Media Group. This raised skepticism that AOL News could maintain its reputation as a non-biased news source, but Ms Huffington said her liberal politics will have no bearing on how she runs the business.

* Just like when she ran the Huffington Post.

And I leave you with this thought.
