Our Hometown Hero(’s) Today is/are Ben Skardon

As dawn breaks across the desert, Ben Skardon reaches out to shake hands with some of the 4,000 participants who file past him during the start of the annual Bataan Memorial Death March at the White Sands Missile Range. The marathon—one route is 26.2 miles and another is 15.2 miles—pays tribute to thousands of surrendered American and Filipino servicemen who were forced by the Japanese army during World War II to march 70 miles through the Philippine jungle to a prison camp. Skardon, a survivor of the 1942 ordeal, offers words of encouragement to those who’ve shown up to honor him and the soldiers who didn’t survive. “Thank you most kindly.” “God bless you.” “God go with you.” Participants, in return, grip his hand respectfully, sometimes tearfully, thanking him for his sacrifice for his country. Despite his brave smile, Skardon is close to tears. The event draws runners from every U.S. state and several countries. Started in 1989 by the Army ROTC at New Mexico State University, the memorial march hits close to home. Of the 1,800 New Mexico soldiers, members of the 200th Coast Artillery of the National Guard, sent to the Philippine Islands during World War II, only half survived the infamous march and the ensuing imprisonment. No matter what the reason, participants often find that the Bataan Memorial Death March is a life-changing event
Ben Skardon is/are our Hometown Hero Today and we salute you.

This Is Nuts

Former pro wrestler and Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura is taking on a new opponent: the TSA. Ventura has an artificial hip that sets off alarms, and he says he's sick of him and other people with prosthetics and wheelchairs constantly being subjected to humiliating body searches. Monday, he filed a lawsuit against the TSA, claiming they violated the Constitution's ban on unreasonable searches with their "warrantless, non-suspicion-based offensive touching, gripping and rubbing sensitive areas of his body."
* No holds are illegal, no matter how dirty! It's like being a pro wrestler again!

HEALTH MOMENT

A few short visits and phone calls with a nurse may be enough to help insomniacs get their zzz's, suggests a new study of sleep-deprived older adults.
Researchers found that more than half of participants overcame chronic insomnia within a month of starting a brief behavioral treatment.
The key ingredient in the therapy was a simple, somewhat counter-intuitive lesson: When you are sleeping poorly, the most important thing you can do is spend less time in bed.
Insomnia affects about one in every five Americans, rising to one in three among the elderly, and has been linked to a range of physical problems, from accidents to hypertension. Not surprisingly, it is also detrimental to mental health.
Three decades of research has shown cognitive behavioral therapy to be equally effective to a pill for insomnia, with fewer side effects. Yet the time and resource-intense strategy -- usually involving between six- and eight hour-long appointments with a clinical psychologist - is not widely available and its cost, generally hundreds of dollars, is prohibitive for many.
"Generally, the most expedient thing to do is just prescribe a sleeping pill.
But the drugs can pose problems, ranging from dependence or abuse to cognitive impairment during the day. And the risks may be even more pronounced among older patients. Under the influence of the drugs, seniors may be more likely to fall and fracture a bone.
While brief behavioral treatment for insomnia is not yet generally available, researchers hope their findings will be "an important first step in that process."
In the meantime researchers offer insomniacs some advice: "If you're not ready to fall asleep, don't lie down in bed and try to force yourself to sleep. And if you wake up in the middle of night and don't fall back asleep easily, get out of bed."

BREAK TIME CHATTER

As another big winter storm front hits the Northeastern US today, University College London researchers are warning that indoor heating might make you fat. They claim that modern society reduces exposure to cold, and that minimizes the need for the body to burn fat to stay warm. They found that people who spend more time in warm temperatures may lose brown fat, the type that burns energy to produce heat, and pack on fat that just makes you obese.
* The white "Crisco" fat.

And I leave you with this thought.

"Vision is not enough. It must be combined with venture. It is not enough to stare up the steps, we must step up the stairs."
