Our Hometown Hero(’s) Today is/are Molly Molloy

New Mexico State University professor and librarian Molly Molloy has made it her personal endeavor to track and document the day-to-day killings in Mexico's deadliest city, Juarez. Molloy has taken on the macabre task of keeping and reporting statistics obtained from local newspaper reports on the daily and cumulative count of the murders in Juarez. The total number of homicides for 2010 alone is estimated to be around 3,100. "The list includes the article as well as information about the victim's name, age and gender, as well as where they were killed," Molloy said. "I feel it is important to show people who the victims are, then you can contradict the government's idea that everyone killed is a highly dangerous criminal, which is something difficult to believe when you see that the majority of those killed are between the ages of 15 and 22. To Molloy, the list she keeps signifies that someone is caring and making sure these victims have a voice that deserves to be heard.
"It's a big deal, and we need to make sure that people are informed about it," she said.
Molly Molloy is/are our Hometown Hero Today and we salute you.

This Is Nuts

Arnold Schwarzenegger seems to be having a tough time giving up power as governor of California. He told the Austrian newspaper Krone that his public service cost him $200 million in lost movie roles and other income, and he lamented that movie salaries have dropped since he took time out. But he said that holding the office left him "addicted" to its power. Arnold also insisted that his puny approval rating at the end was "just a snapshot," and if term limits hadn't forced him to step down, "they would have rocketed to the top."
* Sounds like his ego is back on steroids.

HEALTH MOMENT

Walk more, and not only burn off calories, but also lessen the chance of becoming diabetic, a new study says.
As part of a national study in Australia to measure diabetes levels, experts gave nearly 600 adults a pedometer to measure how many steps they took over two consecutive days in 2000 and again in 2005.
It was found that people who walked the most after five years not only had a lower body mass index, but were also more sensitive to insulin and less likely to develop diabetes.
Many governments and health officials recommend people walk 10,000 steps a day, the equivalent of about five miles (eight kilometres). The study authors, from the Murdoch Children's Research Institute in Melbourne, estimated that if a sedentary person increased their daily steps to reach the 10,000 step threshold, he or she would lower their body mass index by almost one point and improve their sensitivity to insulin by three times.
Health officials have long suggested people stay slim and exercise to avoid diabetes.
"Think about what you do each day and how you can work in more steps," advises the American Diabetes Association on its website, which recommends taking the stairs instead of the elevator. "You'll be amazed at how these extra minutes and steps add up."

BREAK TIME CHATTER

On Tuesday, Regis Philbin made a surprise announcement that after nearly 28 years, he's retiring from his morning talk show, "Live With Regis and Kelly" next fall. He said, "There is a time that everything must come to an end for certain people on camera, especially certain old people." Regis has appeared on so many talk and game shows that he broke Hugh Downs's world record for most hours spent on TV. The Guinness Book editors estimated that he had been on television for 15,662 hours, and that was back in 2006, so he's added five years' worth of appearances to that.
* He was on the air for 28 years with Kathie Lee Gifford and Kelly Ripa, which means he got a total of eight words out.

And I leave you with this thought.

"There are things I can't force. I must adjust. There are times when the greatest change needed is a change of my viewpoint. "
