Celebrity Spotlight

“IF I DIE YOUNG” BAND WONDERS IF THE END IS NEAR. From doves to crow, birds show up over and over again in The Band Perry’s lyrics. So, it would only make sense for us to ask them what they think about the disturbing mass-bird deaths happening around the globe. The band’s Kimberly and Reid Perry wonder if we’re staring at the apocalypse. “[Kimberly] You know, if it is the end of the world, I just want to go out on stage singing country songs. [Reid] I hope it’s not the end of the world. [Kimberly] I personally don’t think that it is. [Reid] It could be alien invasion, through infection. [Kimberly] Maybe it’s just birds falling out of the sky. [Reid] We’ll blame it on the government. It’s a government conspiracy.” End of the world, or not, 2011 rolls on for The Band Perry as they get ready to go on the road with Tim McGraw on his Emotional Traffic tour.

MAKE YOU LAUGH

A Harris poll of over 2,000 Americans found that three out of 10 commit "financial infidelity" by lying to their spouses about money. The most common form of financial infidelity is hiding cash from your spouse. Others include hiding a purchase, bill or secret bank account and lying about how much you earn or how much debt you have. 67 percent of couples affected by financial infidelity said it had led to an argument, and in some cases, separation or divorce.

• Ironically, that was what the secret bank account was for.

Our Hometown Hero(’s) Today is/are Olivia Fierro

While in a coma at Memorial Medical Jim was helpless. Olivia spent countless hours messaging Jim’s hands and feet ultimately resulting in Jim’s full recovery.
Taking it upon herself to come to the aide of another human being in a state of helplessness is what being a hometown hero is all about.
More of us should do more for others thinking less of ourselves.
Olivia Fierro is/are our Hometown Hero Today and we salute you.

This Is Nuts

The University of Oklahoma is appealing to whoever stole cancer researcher Ralk Jankecht's laptop to return it, no questions asked, because it could contain a cure for cancer. Jankecht researches possible cancer treatments, and all his research data was stored on that laptop. The school did not explain how someone who might be smart enough to cure cancer neglected ever to backup his work or print a copy of it, or why he left his irreplaceable laptop in plain sight in his car while he and his wife were having dinner in a nearby restaurant.

* Hey, he studies cancer, not retardation.

HEALTH MOMENT

A new treatment that retrains part of the brain that processes sound may help silence tinnitus — a ringing in the ears that afflicts 10 percent of senior citizens and more than 40 percent of military veterans, U.S. researchers said on Wednesday. They said a device that stimulates the vagus nerve in the neck while simultaneously playing different sounds for several weeks helped eliminate the condition in a group of rats. Tinnitus is sometimes brought on by hearing loss. It occurs as cells in the inner ear are damaged, often from a loud noise. Current drugs help mask tinnitus, but the condition is incurable. Researchers think tinnitus may be caused when too many brain cells become tuned to a specific tone in the brain. So his team set out to train the brain to ignore the nerve signals that cause the ringing sound. To do this, they paired a device that sends electrical impulses to the vagus nerve in the neck with different sounds. Stimulating this nerve releases chemicals that trigger changes in the brain.
The University of Texas at Dallas team tested this approach in a series of experiments with rats, using an indirect but accepted method of testing hearing in animals. The MicroTransponder Company is developing a wireless medical device to stimulate the vagus nerve and hopes to test it in people later this year. Cyberonics Inc already sells vagus nerve stimulation devices for people with epilepsy and depression.

BREAK TIME CHATTER

Minnesota astronomer Parke Kunkle says that because the moon's pull causes the Earth to wobble on its axis, the alignment of the stars relative to Earth has shifted. In the 3,000 years since the zodiac was invented, there's been enough of a realignment so everyone's astrological signs are actually off by nearly a month. For example, you might think you're an Aquarius but actually be born under Pisces.

* Luckily, by a miraculous coincidence, the newspaper horoscope for either one will fit you perfectly

And I leave you with this thought.

"One word frees us of all the weight and pain of life; that word is Love."
